Each summer, Auckland's largest cultural festival turns a sports ground in the south of the city into a glowing landscape of hundreds of handmade lanterns. The BNZ Auckland Lantern Festival celebrates the Lunar New Year and the Chinese cultural traditions that are part of Auckland's identity, with stage performances, street food, family activities and an evening fireworks display, and it is free to attend, although tickets are required.

This guide is for people planning to attend the 2027 festival, from Auckland residents to travellers from other parts of New Zealand and overseas. It sets out what the organiser has published for 2027, explains the ticketing rules and how they worked last year, and covers the practical issues that matter most for a visit: how to reach the venue, accessibility, weather, where to stay and what else to do in Auckland. It also makes a point that causes confusion every year: the festival's dates are not the same as the date of Lunar New Year. Information is taken from the organiser's published pages as at mid-October 2026. Some of those pages still carry details from the 2026 festival, and where this guide uses 2026 information as context it says so clearly.

What Is the Auckland Lantern Festival?

The Auckland Lantern Festival is a large free community festival that marks the Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival tradition. Auckland Transport has described it as New Zealand's largest cultural festival, and the organiser's 2027 programme includes more than 500 handmade lanterns on display across four days, performances on the main stage, more than 65 street food and retail stalls, amusement rides for children and fireworks at night. It is delivered by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, a council-controlled organisation, and supported by Auckland Council Events, with the Auckland Chinese Community Centre as its community partner.

For visitors, the appeal is the atmosphere. Lanterns are lit in the evening, the site is full of families, and the food, music and displays combine into a night out that suits all ages. The festival is also a good introduction to Chinese New Year traditions as they are celebrated in New Zealand, and it is one of several large Lunar New Year events held around the country each year.

Auckland Lantern Festival 2027 Dates and Location

The organiser's 2027 page lists the festival for Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 February 2027 at Manukau Sports Bowl. Opening hours are 5pm to 10.30pm on Thursday and Friday and 4pm to 10.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. The banner at the top of the organiser's page still showed outdated 2026 dates when this guide was prepared, but the event listing in the body of the page, last updated on 1 September 2026, gives the 2027 dates used here. If you are booking flights and accommodation, check the dates on the official page again before paying for anything non-refundable.

The venue, Manukau Sports Bowl, is in the Manukau area of south Auckland, with access from Boundary Road. The organiser's pages mention Gate B off Boundary Road, a designated bike area at Gates A, and accessible drop-off points marked on the festival map. Because it is a ground rather than a city street, the festival has fenced gates and bag checks, and the layout is different from city-centre events such as Auckland's other cultural festivals.

The festival dates are not the date of Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, according to government holiday calendars such as Singapore's, and begins the Year of the Goat. The Auckland festival is scheduled for 18 to 21 February, which is after the new year itself. The traditional Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the new year, which counting from 6 February is Saturday 20 February 2027, and the Auckland festival's dates include that day. Festival dates are set by organisers, can change, and do not need to match a calendar date, so use the organiser's page for planning. In 2027, Lunar New Year also falls on the same day as Waitangi Day, a national day with its own events, which you can read about in our Waitangi Day 2027 guide.

How to Get Tickets and Understand Admission Requirements

The organiser lists Auckland Lantern Festival tickets as free but required. The 2027 page reviewed for this guide does not name a ticketing partner or say when tickets will be released, so no 2027 ticket details are given here. As at mid-October 2026, tickets cannot yet be booked from the 2027 page, and you should not assume a ticket is available or guaranteed until the organiser announces the process. Look for the announcement on the official festival page, and treat offers from any other source with caution.

To give a sense of how it may work, here is what the organiser's help pages said about the 2026 festival. These are 2026 arrangements and may differ in 2027. For 2026, free tickets were available only through the official ticketing partner, iTicket, and the organiser warned that anyone asking for payment was not an official source. Online allocations for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday were later listed as sold out, although staff could issue tickets at the gate on arrival, with possible delays in the busy evening period. Tickets were valid only for the date selected, re-entry on the same ticket was not allowed, and tickets could be saved on a device or printed.

Planning around the ticketing uncertainty

Because the 2026 festival's online tickets sold out for the weekend, treat 2027 demand as potentially high. Check the official page regularly from the start of the year, be ready to book as soon as release dates are announced, choose a day you can attend and avoid committing to non-refundable travel until you have confirmed tickets. If your plans change, the 2026 help pages said ticketholders who could not attend could cancel their tickets so they could be relisted, which is considerate and helps other families.

What Visitors Can Expect From the Lantern Displays

The lanterns are the heart of the festival. The organiser says the 2027 festival will display more than 500 handmade lanterns across the four days. Lantern displays are traditionally designed around themes such as animals, flowers, mythical creatures and cultural symbols, and they are lit as the evening darkens, so the best viewing is after dusk. The organiser's pages do not describe individual 2027 displays, so the specific designs and the display for the Year of the Goat will be shown once the programme is released.

If photography matters to you, the early evening gives some light for the lantern detail before full darkness, and the main stage and walkways can be crowded later. Bring a phone or camera that handles low light, be considerate of people around you, and allow time to walk the site rather than rushing from stage to stalls.

Chinese Cultural Performances and Entertainment

The organiser describes performances on the main stage, both traditional and contemporary. Lantern festivals commonly feature dance, music, martial arts, lion and dragon dancing and community performance groups, but the 2027 lineup had not been published when this guide was prepared, so check the organiser's programme for the performers and the stage times. The festival is supported by the Auckland Chinese Community Centre as a community partner, and many community groups take part in Lunar New Year events.

The festival also provides an introduction to Chinese cultural traditions for visitors who may not know them. Watching performances with some background in the symbolism of lanterns, the Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival adds meaning, and the section below on traditions in New Zealand gives a short overview.

Food Stalls, Markets and Family Activities

The organiser's 2027 page lists more than 65 street food and retail stalls selling food, crafts and gifts, along with amusement rides for children. The page also lists a BNZ basketball court near Gate B with free 15-minute BNZ Kiwi Hoops skills sessions, and a BNZ Customer Lounge entered by showing a BNZ card, which are sponsor activities that may appeal to families. The festival is smoke-free, including vaping, and alcohol-free, and the 2026 help pages said camping chairs and picnic blankets were allowed, which suggests that families can settle on the grass, although the rules for 2027 should be checked.

Food choices at festivals of this kind often include noodles, dumplings, skewers, bubble tea and sweet snacks, but the organiser's pages do not list individual 2027 stalls, so check the programme for details. If you have allergies or dietary needs, ask stallholders directly about ingredients. Carry a card and some cash, because payment methods vary between stalls, and expect queues at popular stalls in the early evening.

Best Times to Visit and Crowd Planning

The organiser's hours give you the framework. Thursday and Friday open at 5pm and Saturday and Sunday at 4pm, with a closing time of 10.30pm. The fireworks are listed from 9.50pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, from the centre of the park, with none listed for Thursday, so Friday to Sunday evenings are likely to be the busiest. The 2026 festival's organiser said more than 110,000 people were expected, according to Auckland Transport's pre-festival announcement, and the 2026 help pages warned of delays at the gate around 7pm to 8pm, so plan for crowds in 2027 as well.

If you prefer a quieter visit, arriving at opening time and seeing the lanterns as they light up gives a calmer experience before the evening rush, and Thursday is typically a better choice for a smaller crowd, although this depends on the number of tickets issued and is not guaranteed. If the fireworks are your priority, plan to be inside the site well before 9.50pm, expect crowds at the best viewing areas, and allow time to leave afterwards, because trains and buses are busy at closing time.

How to Travel to Manukau Sports Bowl

For Auckland Lantern Festival transport, the organiser's 2027 page recommends public transport and walking, and notes that parking restrictions and road closures will be in place with thousands of people expected. No shuttle service is mentioned on the 2027 page. The organiser's help pages explained that the sports bowl is closed to traffic, that Sandrine Avenue is limited to residents and accessibility drop-offs, and that traffic is managed on Boundary Road, and Gate B is off Boundary Road. Manukau Station is the closest train station on Auckland's Eastern Line, and Manukau city centre has buses and the Westfield shopping centre nearby.

To understand how transport worked last time, here is the 2026 arrangement, which may differ in 2027. In 2026, festival tickets included free travel on Auckland Transport buses and trains from two hours before the event until the end of regular services, and special event buses ran between Manukau Station, Westfield Manukau and the sports bowl. There was also a weekend partial Eastern Line closure, so check for planned works at the time of your visit. Use Auckland Transport's journey planner or app on the day, as event services and track works can change from year to year.

Accessibility and Family Travel Considerations

The organiser's 2027 page says that most of the festival is wheelchair accessible via paved laneways, and that accessible drop-off points, parking and toilets are marked on the festival map. The 2026 help pages added that limited accessible parking was available on Boundary Road next to the accessible drop-off point, that some entertainment areas are on undulating green fields with kerbs that can be hard to cross in a wheelchair, and that service animals were welcome. Pushchairs were allowed, with the same terrain caveat. Check the 2027 festival map and the accessibility information when they are published.

For families, the practical points are a meeting place in case of separation, ear protection for sensitive children at the fireworks, a pram or carrier suited to uneven grass and a plan for a long, late evening. The 2026 pages said pets must stay at home and that bags might be checked at the gate with no bag storage, so pack light. Water stations and a Hato Hone St John medical tent were marked on the 2026 map, and it is sensible to look for the equivalent on the 2027 map.

Auckland Weather in February

February is the warmest part of Auckland's year. New Zealand's climate agency NIWA's long-term averages (1991 to 2020) put the mean daily maximum at about 24.4°C and the mean daily minimum at about 16.6°C. These are long-term averages and not a forecast for 18 to 21 February 2027, and individual evenings can be warm and humid, cooler with a breeze or wet. The festival ground is open grass and paving, with limited cover.

The organiser's 2026 help pages said the festival went ahead rain or shine and recommended layers and waterproof clothing, and a similar approach makes sense in 2027, although the rules and any weather policy should be checked on the official page. Bring sun protection for late afternoon, a light waterproof jacket and comfortable closed shoes for grass and crowds. For a wider view of the seasons, see our season guide to visiting New Zealand.

Where to Stay Near the Festival

The simplest option is to stay in Manukau or nearby south Auckland suburbs, which puts you within a short trip of the sports bowl. Staying near Auckland Airport is another convenient choice if you are arriving or leaving by air, and accommodation along the Eastern and Southern train lines gives access by train. Central Auckland is a good base if you want to see the city as well, using the train to Manukau on festival evenings, although you should check train times and any track works for the late return.

February is peak season, and the Lantern Festival weekend can sell out accommodation near the venue, so book early and choose flexible cancellation terms until your festival tickets are confirmed. If you are travelling with family, apartments or motels with kitchens can be economical, and it helps to choose accommodation with parking if you plan to drive for other days of your trip.

Other Auckland Attractions Worth Visiting

Auckland has plenty to fill the days around an evening festival. In the city centre, the Sky Tower, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and the waterfront at Viaduct Harbour are within easy reach, and the Auckland Domain and Auckland War Memorial Museum are a short trip away. A ferry from the Downtown terminal reaches Waiheke Island for beaches and wineries, and Rangitoto Island offers an easy volcano hike. Our guide to top destinations for first-time visitors places Auckland among the country's highlights.

If you are extending your trip, February is a good month for beaches around Auckland and for travelling north to the Bay of Islands or south to the Coromandel and Rotorua. Events later in the summer are covered in our guide to New Zealand summer festivals for 2026 and 2027.

Three-Day Auckland Lantern Festival Itinerary

This sample three-day plan assumes you arrive on Thursday 18 February, with Sunday 21 February as a departure day, and that you have confirmed festival tickets for one evening. Adjust it to your tickets and flights.

Day 1 (Thursday 18 February): Arrive and explore the city

Arrive, settle in and walk the waterfront and Viaduct Harbour. If your tickets are for the opening evening, rest in the afternoon and travel to Manukau Sports Bowl by public transport in time for opening at 5pm, then see the lanterns as they light up.

Day 2 (Friday 19 February): Auckland by day, festival by night

Spend the day at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Domain and Auckland War Memorial Museum, or take a morning ferry to Waiheke Island. If your tickets are for Friday, travel to Manukau in the early evening and be inside the site well before the 9.50pm fireworks.

Day 3 (Saturday 20 February): The traditional Lantern Festival day

Take a slower morning, with brunch and an easy walk or beach visit. If you hold Saturday tickets, plan an afternoon arrival (the festival opens at 4pm), expect larger crowds and plan your journey home in advance. Saturday 20 February is also the fifteenth day of the new year, the traditional Lantern Festival day.

Sunday 21 February: Final festival day and departure

If you missed out on tickets earlier, check whether any are available for the final day, and plan flexible departure times. Otherwise spend the morning on a final stop such as Sky Tower or the harbour before heading to your flight.

Chinese New Year Traditions in New Zealand

Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the Chinese calendar, and Chinese New Year in Auckland in 2027 will be marked by community events as well as the lantern festival. It is and it is celebrated across New Zealand's Chinese and wider Asian communities as well as by many other New Zealanders. Common traditions include a reunion dinner with family, cleaning and decorating the home in red, giving red envelopes to children and younger relatives, lion and dragon dances and visits to friends and relatives. The festival period ends with the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day, when lanterns are lit and many communities hold public events. Customs vary between families and regions, and not everyone celebrates in the same way.

In New Zealand, major cities host public Lunar New Year events, and Auckland's lantern festival is among the biggest. For visitors, the best approach is to attend with curiosity and respect, follow guidance given at events, and ask before photographing people. If you are travelling from a country where Lunar New Year is a major holiday, remember that flights and accommodation can be busier around the new year itself, which in 2027 is on Saturday 6 February.

NZeTA and New Zealand Visitor Entry Preparation

Whether you need an NZeTA depends on your nationality, your passport and how you are travelling. Citizens of visa waiver countries and territories may be eligible for an NZeTA instead of a visa, and our country-by-country NZeTA information pages cover many nationalities, including Singapore and Hong Kong. Citizens of China can use an NZeTA only in specific situations, such as when travelling from Australia with an eligible Australian visa, and otherwise generally need a visitor visa, as explained on our page for Chinese citizens.

Immigration New Zealand currently advises allowing 72 hours for NZeTA processing and notes that its checks can take up to three days, and applications can take longer if further checks are needed. No approval or timeframe can be guaranteed, and an NZeTA does not guarantee entry, because immigration officers can refuse entry, for example if you cannot show enough funds or a way to leave. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after you plan to leave New Zealand, and everyone entering must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which for air travel can be submitted from 24 hours before the journey begins. A separate International Visitor Levy generally applies to visitors who are not exempt, as explained in our levy guide.

Applying before you commit to tickets and travel

Apply for your authorisation as soon as flights are booked, and try to confirm your entry route before committing to non-refundable accommodation. Our complete NZeTA application guide walks through the process, our comparison of an NZeTA and a traditional visa explains the options, and our overview of New Zealand travel requirements covers passports, funds and onward travel.
